Why a Turkish rug, and why Mehraban

A Turkish rug is more than a furnishing. It is a piece of textile art with provenance, intention, and longevity — woven by hand, colored by nature, and capable of outlasting the room you place it in today. Whether you are drawn to the gracious scale of an Oushak, the geometric clarity of a Taspinar, or the weathered charm of an antique Anatolian, each piece in our collection has been selected for quality, character, and authenticity.

We would love to help you find the right one. Every Turkish rug we carry can be viewed in person at our Los Angeles showroom, and our team is always happy to share the story behind a piece, suggest sizing for your space, or source something specific through our custom capabilities. Explore the collection, and discover a tradition worth living with.

Featured Turkish Rugs

Each Turkish rug at Mehraban is one of a kind. We choose pieces that represent the range of the tradition — from spacious, designer-favorite revivals to small antique village weavings with real character. Here are four that capture that breadth beautifully.

Turkish Oushak Revival Rug

The Oushak (or Uşak) is perhaps the most recognizable of all Turkish rugs, and for good reason. Woven historically in western Anatolia, Oushaks are loved for their soft, open palettes and generous, large-scale patterns — the kind of rug that quietly grounds a room without ever overwhelming it. This revival piece honors that legacy on a grand scale, measuring 12' 6" by 17' 5", with the luminous, low-contrast coloring that has made Oushaks a perennial favorite among interior designers. Hand-knotted in wool, it is ideal for a great room or expansive living space that calls for warmth and presence in equal measure.

Antique Turkish Anatolian Rug

Where the Oushak is refined and courtly, this antique Anatolian rug speaks in the older, bolder voice of village and tribal weaving. "Anatolian" is a broad and storied category, encompassing the geometric medallions, stylized motifs, and rich earth tones that have defined rural Turkish weaving for centuries. At 8' 9" by 12' 2", this piece carries the patina that only genuine age can give — the softened wool, the lived-in color, the sense of history underfoot. For a collector who wants a true antique with room-defining scale, it is a remarkable find.

Vintage Turkish Taspinar

From the workshops of Taşpınar in central Anatolia comes a Turkish rug that showcases the region's mastery of geometric composition. Taspinar weavings are known for their architectural precision and their disciplined use of negative space, and this vintage example is a quiet masterclass in both. A central diamond medallion in deep indigo and cream anchors a field of delicate botanical motifs, framed by stepped spandrels and a border of stylized palmettes drawn straight from the classical Anatolian vocabulary. The blues come from natural indigo, the soft reds from madder, and the gentle abrash throughout reveals the hand-spun wool beneath. At a versatile 4' 1" by 5' 10", it suits both contemporary and traditional interiors with ease.

Antique Turkish Oushak Fertek

The smallest of the four, this antique Oushak from the Fertek area near Niğde proves that a Turkish rug needn't be large to be significant. Measuring 2' 8" by 3' 7", it is a finely woven village piece in the Oushak tradition — the perfect scale for an entry, a reading nook, a layered accent atop a larger rug, or simply a beautiful object to live with. Hand-knotted in wool and softened by genuine age, it offers an accessible entry point into collecting authentic antique Turkish rugs, with all the soul of its larger counterparts.

Turkish Rugs: A Living Tradition, Hand-Knotted in Anatolia

There is a particular quality to a Turkish rug that reveals itself slowly. You notice the color first — the soft, sun-warmed terracottas and luminous ivories, the deep indigos drawn from the plant itself. Then you notice the structure: the confident geometry, the way a single medallion anchors an entire field, the small irregularities that prove a human hand was here. At Mehraban, our Turkish rugs are among the most beloved pieces in the showroom, and it isn't hard to understand why. They carry centuries of craftsmanship in every knot.

A weaving heritage that shaped the world

The story of Turkish rugs begins in Anatolia, the vast peninsula that bridges Europe and Asia. For more than seven hundred years, the villages and workshops of this region have produced some of the finest hand-knotted carpets ever made. By the fifteenth century, Anatolian weavings were so prized that they appeared in the paintings of European masters — a Turkish rug draped across a table or beneath the feet of a merchant prince was shorthand for wealth, taste, and reach across the known world.

What sets these pieces apart is technique. Turkish rugs are traditionally tied with the symmetrical knot — known to weavers as the Ghiordes knot, after the Anatolian town of Gördes. This knot wraps fully around two warp threads, producing a dense, durable, beautifully defined pile that holds crisp geometric detail for generations. Pair that structure with the region's other great gift — lustrous, hand-spun highland wool — and you have a textile built to be walked on, lived with, and passed down.

Color is the final element of the craft. The most treasured Turkish rugs are colored with natural dyes: indigo for blues, madder root for reds and rose, and a quiet spectrum of plant-derived golds, greens, and browns. These dyes age gracefully, mellowing into the gentle tonal shifts that collectors call abrash — the subtle banding of color that gives genuine hand-spun wool its depth and movement. No machine can replicate it.

More about Mehraban

Mehraban is a third-generation Luxury Rug Store in Los Angeles with Persian roots and an extensive and exquisite collection of modern and traditional high-end rugs. As a member of La Cienega Design Quarter, Mehraban has been featured in magazines and treasured by designers and celebrities for its sophisticated designs, and wide range of colors, patterns, and textures.

Honoring the Ancient Craft of Rug Weaving

The world is a beautiful place, and there are few things as stunning as a handwoven rug. From traditional Oriental rugs to the more contemporary styles of Europe and North America, Mehraban collaborates with workshops from around the world, home to the traditional craftsmanship that defines luxury rugs. With collections from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Turkey, Iran, and Morocco, each of our rugs highlight the intricate design and rich history of their region of origin.

Finding the right rug for you

Defining the color

Luxury rugs are not just floor covering - they are an art form. Hand-woven by skilled artisans, each rug can tell a story about the culture and history of its people. Traditional high-end rugs are often made from natural fibers, which are dyed using plant-based dyes. The patterns and colors of the rug can vary depending on the region where it was made. For example, Persian rugs often feature bold geometric patterns, while Turkish rugs tend to be ornate and colorful. Our popular Modern and Transitional collections also feature a rich neutral color palette made up of muted, natural tones inspired by the hues of the earth.

Identifying Luxury Rug Materials

Most of our extensive rugs are designed in Los Angeles by Mehraban artists and handmade around the world using materials such as silk, cotton, and wool to create heirloom-quality pieces that are softer and more durable than standard options. Our collections additionally include unique material combinations using Mohair, Cashmere, and Bamboo Silk, to mention a few, that add depth and interest to any space. As purveyors of antique and modern rugs for three generations, Mehraban also offers its expertise to properly care for and restore your luxury rugs.

When it comes to choosing the material for you, there are a few things to keep in mind. If the rug is going to be in a high-traffic area, choosing a material that withstands wear and tear is key. Wool, for example, is one of the most durable materials on the market and will last for years with proper care.

Sizes, Shapes, and Forms

Finding the right size for your luxury rug is important to achieve a harmonious design. If you are placing the rug in a living room or other large space, you'll want to make sure that the rug is large enough that all of the furniture in the room can sit comfortably on it.  A good rule of thumb is to leave at least 18 inches of bare floor around the perimeter of the rug. This will create a border that helps define the space and makes it feel more cohesive.  Using our size tool will help to narrow down your selection of rugs, based on the width and length you require for your space.

If you are placing the rug in a smaller space like a bedroom or office, you'll want to make sure that the rug doesn't overwhelm the room. In this case, leaving at least 12 inches of bare floor around the perimeter of the rug could be a good practice.

Ultimately, you'll want to choose a size that feels right for your space and your personal style. You can also try layering rugs to add visual interest and achieve the right amount of floor coverage.
