Turkish Kars

From the workshops of Kars in eastern Anatolia, this hand-knotted wool rug demonstrates the restrained palette and geometric sensibility that distinguish Turkish rugs from this mountainous region. The central medallion, rendered in soft blue against an ivory ground, anchors a field populated with stylized palmettes and botanical motifs executed in warm taupe and cream. Kurdish and Armenian weavers in Kars employed hand-spun wool and natural dyes—indigo for the blues, walnut hulls for the browns—creating the subtle abrash that gives depth to each color zone. The main border features a series of reciprocal triangular guards, while the field's corners display traditional spandrel motifs that echo Caucasian design influence.
