Vintage Turkish Kars Runner

Woven in the Kars region of eastern Anatolia, this hand-knotted runner demonstrates the geometric precision and earthy palette characteristic of Turkish rugs from this mountainous borderland. The elongated format showcases two large diamond medallions rendered in cream against a field of warm camel and toast tones, each anchored by smaller geometric motifs that speak to the region's cultural crossroads between Anatolia and the Caucasus. Natural dyes derived from madder root and walnut husks create the subtle gradations of brown and beige, while hand-spun wool provides the foundation for both warp and weft. The reciprocal border pattern, executed in cream against the darker ground, frames the composition with traditional geometric elements that Kurdish and Turkish weavers have employed across generations of workshop practice. Village looms produced these runners for domestic use, their narrow proportions suited to corridors and passages within traditional homes.
