Woven in Persian workshops during the late 19th century, this antique rug demonstrates the sophisticated geometric vocabulary that distinguished Tabriz production from contemporary regional centers. Hand-knotted with hand-spun wool on cotton foundations, the textile employs natural dyes including indigo for the deep blue field and madder root for the coral-toned border elements. The central field displays an intricate herati pattern—fish motifs swimming between diamond lattices—contained within multiple guard borders that frame the composition with reciprocal palmette designs. The weaving technique reflects urban workshop standards, with consistent knot density and precise execution of complex curvilinear forms translated into the geometric constraints of the loom. Subtle abrash variations across the blue field reveal the hand-dyeing process, while areas of natural wear have developed the characteristic patina that collectors recognize as evidence of authentic age and household use. Persian weavers working within established guild systems created these carpets for merchant-class interiors, balancing decorative density with the restrained color palette favored in Qajar-period domestic spaces. The survival of original selvages and the integrity of structural elements position this example within the upper tier of 19th-century Persian textile production. Discover more Persian Rugs
