Antique Persian Sultanabad Rug 26464

This antique Sultanabad brims with arabesques. The indigo abrash ground sets off contrasting tones of rose and brick red in the churning large scale foliated motifs of the allover field pattern. Expansive sequence of borders on ivory, coral pink and red grounds feature intricate rosette meanders. Areas of etched pile focused in the center of the rug evoke a wabi-sabi poetics of time. Sultanabad, current day Arak in northwest Iran, became a prominent center of village and workshop rug productions with a focus on European markets in the 19th and 20th centuries.
