Woven in the workshops of northwest Persia during the early 20th century, this antique rug demonstrates the sophisticated paisley traditions that flourished under Qajar patronage. Hand-knotted with hand-spun wool on cotton foundations, the textile employs natural dyes including indigo and walnut to achieve its restrained palette of ivory, taupe, and soft blue. The field displays rows of boteh motifs—the teardrop forms that Persian weavers refined over centuries—arranged in orderly progression across the central expanse. Multiple guard borders frame the composition, each containing stylized floral elements that echo the field's organic vocabulary. The main border presents a flowing vine pattern punctuated by palmettes, rendered with the precise geometry characteristic of urban Persian workshops. Subtle abrash creates gentle color variations throughout, evidence of the natural dyeing processes that distinguished period production. This weaving represents the final flowering of classical Persian carpet design before mechanization transformed the industry, preserving techniques and motifs that connected 20th-century artisans to their Safavid predecessors.
